The party was in the employ of an evil dragon named Fymriphol.
Fymriphol has a large following in the distant south (Istaemekar Empire), where she was driven after her defeat by her goodly brother Frakunth. The party was her special task force, and also represented some of the most influential figures in her armies.
Tradestown was a fairly unremarkable port city, except for the significant fact that it contained the intersection of two potent ley lines, making it a site of power for some obscure and ancient rites of magic. The party was tasked with performing a twisted ritual which would have rendered the area a portal to the distant land of Stenmok, where Fymriphol's armies were massing for a surprise attack. Something went wrong with the ritual, and instead of opening a portal, the entire city vanished in spectacular fashion (sonic wave), slaying the party, but severing their link to their new bodies.
